My friend visited Chernobyl near the nuclear reactor meltdown area. It was good theme for our Zombicide game, but I did not dare to eat the apple I got as a souvenir..
Look how it matches the color of Zombicide figures.. The apple stayed in the bag.
The likelihood of radioactive material embedding itself into the fruit is very low by now. Your friend probably dragged more radioactive material along in the soles of his shoes. I visited Chernobyl in 2011 before the situation in Ukraine got ugly. 500 meters from the reactor "tomb" the radiation was still less than in an airplane cruising at 10km. I had a dosimeter there and the dose I was getting in the vicinity of the reactor was actually less than during the fallout of the accident in Finland: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s-HDIBcQJfM/TjEecAw4FRI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/6i62rDRH2LY/s912/IMG_0948.JPG
